Dow House
519 Stevens St, Iowa Falls, IA
A house built during the 1870’s was acquired by the Iowa Falls Historical Society in 1999 and was named The Dow House in honor of the Dow family which had lived in it for 75 years. The house was refurbished to retain it’s original features including the woodwork with unique pocket doors, a coal-burning fireplace and a turn-of-the-century style kitchen with the original cabinets, a back stairway to the second floor and a clothes chute for conveniently sending soiled clothing to the basement for washing. Every effort has been made to retain the historical perspective of the house.
The Dow House has a display of many photographs of Iowa Falls landmarks, buildings, early founders, and historic events. There are lots of other interesting items such as period furniture, Iowa Falls memorabilia and other items of historical significance. The second floor contains two rooms which are periodically changed to showcase various themes. Another room permanently displays the Earl Kunz petit point collection. The basement contains a canning room, many agricultural tools and a miniature farmstead with various farm buildings, machinery and animals.
